International Moving to American Samoa

An unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the South Pacific and consists of seven islands, American Samoa is the eastern part of the archipelago of Samoa in the west, Western Samoa and the Republic of Samoa, is an independent nation.

The first Polynesian settlers seem to have reached Samoa from Fiji around 1000 BC to the eighteenth century, Western Samoa supports a complex society with fortified villages, fields intensively cultivated extensive trade between the islands. In 1722, Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen was the first European to visit the islands. Many other expeditions have visited in the course of the next century, European influence was limited, however, until 1830, when the first English missionaries arrived. Since then, whalers, traders and missionaries were gradually more and more.

In the 1870s, were Britain and Germany to compete with the U.S. trade and diplomatic advantage in Samoa. In 1872, the Administration Grant sent Colonel Albert Steinberger as a "special commissioner" to "help" the island, and U.S. interests in general yet. Samoans Steinberger helped draft a constitution, but then moved as a leader with almost dictatorial powers, he was overthrown and expelled by the British in 1876.

Samoa is still unstable, with various local factions bidding for the support of the colonial powers. In 1889, Britain, Germany and the United States tried to resolve their disputes on the islands with the Treaty of Berlin, which has created about one. Neutral and independent Samoa to the "advice" of the powers This arrangement, and Samoa has experienced two phases of the civil war in the 1890s. In 1899, the three branches of the Treaty of Berlin replaced with the Tripartite Pact, which divided Samoa between Germany and the United States, Great Britain to withdraw all claims in exchange for recognition of their rights in other territories in the Pacific. The 1899 line of division, which extends along the 171st degree of longitude, is now the international border between American Samoa and the independent Republic of Samoa.

The new colony was placed under the jurisdiction of the US Navy, and the executive power was transferred to a series of naval governors. American claims to the islands was strengthened by various articles of capitulation of the leaders of Samoa between 1900 and 1904, although Congress has not ratified until the 1929th

With the growth of Japanese militarism in the mid-1930, Western Samoa began to take on a new strategic importance. Samoa Islands in 1940 had become a zone of formation of the U.S. Marines. After Pearl Harbor, military facilities were rapidly and massively expanded, and Western Samoa became the staging area at the back of the U.S. offensive in the South Pacific. The military has given up at the end of the war, but this is a huge U.S. military goods in Samoa and had a lasting impact on society.

In 1951, control of the islands were moved from the Navy Department of the Interior. The Samoans had a certain autonomy, when American Samoa has approved its first constitution in 1966. This constitution is still in force, and it gives a three-part system of government similar to the American standard, but with some concessions to local customs unique. CEO Islands continued to be a governor appointed by Washington until 1977 when the post was made optional. Since then, the islands had considerable autonomy, particularly in local affairs, although certain powers are reserved to the Minister of the Interior.

Samoans are U.S. citizens, although not U.S. citizens. They have loyalty to the United States, and American diplomatic and military protection, but is not entitled to a representative in Congress. Samoa is the area "unregistered", ie not all the provisions and the protection of the U.S. Constitution applies there.

Samoans can travel freely and to live, the United States. 2000 census gave the population of American Samoa on 57 291, of whom 88.2 percent were ethnic Samoans.
