He first visited by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1540, the Tennessee region was later claimed by France and Britain after the 1670 and 1680 explorations of Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet, Sieur de la Salle, and James Needham and Gabriel Arthur.
